Online Etiquette

 The online world is much more casual than the offline one. From the way that the words are typed, to what is said, to how you say it, when and where, people tend to like the casual freedom of the internet and are generally more relaxed in their interactions with strangers and friends alike. However, there are still some rules that should be adhered to, especially when you are participating in a chat room discussion or talking one-on-one via an instant message service.

 It’s All About What You Say

Oppositely from offline interactions, online etiquette has a little more to do with what you say as opposed to how you say it. When you are chatting online or even writing emails, keep in mind that the people you are sending to do not have the same advantages as they would if you were speaking face-to-face. They can’t see your facial expressions, read your body language or hear your tone of voice, so some of things you may write are in danger of being grossly misinterpreted and leading to offenses.  

 That is not to say that you can’t be yourself is most respects, but you should at least be aware that the person you are interacting with is not reading what you wrote with the previous knowledge or experience of the kind of person you really are. Online interactions are extremely subjective and should be a place where manners, respect and understanding still apply.

 Understand that What You Say Lasts

People can and will save what you write online. This fact is important to keep in mind and may help you to remember to keep your online interactions respectful and free of any potential entanglements that can be used against you later. Think of your online interactions in the same way you would as talking in a setting that uses security cameras or voice recordings. Everything you send can be saved by the recipient and you never know how he or she may use that information in the future.

 So, if you make threats for any reason or if you reveal any secrets, know that those words do not disappear. Somewhere, someone has them in their possession and can bring them to light at a potentially inconvenient time in your life, if your relationship ever sours. Unless you are talking to someone you know well, and are confident that, no matter what, anything you say is safe with them, it is probably best to make sure that you always remain pleasant, respectful and a little bit guarded when you are chatting, emailing or interacting with a stranger or online relationship.

 Be Aware of Cultural Differences

Because the internet is a world-wide platform for interactions, it may be that some of the people who you meet will be located in countries all across the globe. This is a great way to expand your circle of friends and meet interesting people who have a lot to offer. However, even if everyone speaks the same language, it may be that there are times of confusion and insult, even if the intent is not present.

 When interacting online, avoid the use of jargon, or words that could be misconstrued in their meaning. For example, in the United Kingdom, a “fag” is a word that is used to refer to a cigarette, while in the United States, it is considered to be a mighty insult aimed at homosexuals. In many languages, especially in English, some words have more than one meaning. This why it is important that you are clear in your intent when you write, so as to avoid as much confusion as possible.
